From Silence to Strength: Turning My Pain into Purpose
Growing Up in Silence and Fear.
My name is Karl Matthews, and for much of my childhood, I lived in silence and confusion. I grew up in a home where fear hung in the air and violence was a constant shadow. As a little boy, I often hid in my room, heart pounding, trying to shut out the crashes of anger echoing through the house. I was hurt by the people who were supposed to protect me, and I didn't know why. Too scared to speak up, I learned to stay quiet and make myself small, hoping it would make the chaos go away. In those years of silent suffering, I longed for just one person to notice, to pull me aside and gently ask, "Is everything okay?" Those four simple words could have changed my life. But that question never came. At school I would plaster on a shaky smile or keep my head down, praying a teacher or friend might see through the facade. Inside, I felt isolated and worthless, as if I was carrying a dark secret that no one could ever understand. The confusion was overwhelming I couldn't fathom what I had done to deserve such pain, and I feared that maybe it was somehow my fault.
Finding Strength in the Army
Surviving became my only goal. I counted down the years until I could escape. The day I turned eighteen, I finally saw a door open to a different life. I left home as soon as I could and joined the British Army. I remember stepping onto the training ground in 2006 with a duffel bag in hand and something unfamiliar in my chest: hope. For the first time, I felt like I had a chance to break free from my past. The Army became the family I never truly had. It gave me structure, discipline, and a sense of brotherhood. I learned to stand tall, to look people in the eye, and to believe that I could be more than the scared child I had been. The Army taught me how to fight, how to lead, and how to persevere. On the outside, I grew strong and capable. But even as I wore the uniform proudly, I couldn't fully escape the shadows that followed me from childhood. There were nights after training exercises when I'd lie in my bunk, staring at the ceiling, and the old memories would flood back the yelling, the fear, that small trembling boy I once was. I still carried those invisible wounds. I realised that leaving home and donning a uniform wasn’t the end of my healing; it was just the beginning.
Confronting My Past and Healing
After fifteen years of service, those hidden scars finally demanded my attention. I left the Army not by choice, but because my mind and body needed healing. I returned to civilian life carrying the weight of post-traumatic stress from both my past and my years of service. At first, I felt like I was right back in that dark place – anxious, on edge, and uncertain who I was without the Army. I had survived so much, yet I was facing depression and anxiety that threatened to pull me under. This time, I knew I couldn't stay silent. I decided to do the bravest thing I could think of: ask for help. I began therapy, talking through the pain I had buried for decades. I leaned on the support of my wife, my family, and a few close friends who stood by me. It was one of the hardest battles I've ever fought confronting my past and acknowledging my vulnerability but slowly, day by day, I started to heal. I learned that needing help didn't make me weak. In fact, it was the very step that began to set me free from the chains of my childhood trauma. During my recovery, I found an unexpected source of strength and healing: boxing. I'd always been drawn to boxing the focus, the discipline, the way it forces you to be present in the moment. I started training again, not for competition, but for myself. Every time I laced up my gloves and stepped into the gym, I felt a little lighter. The heavy bag became my outlet; with each punch I released a bit of anger and a bit of fear. Boxing gave me a healthy way to channel my pain and turn it into power. It taught me how to control my emotions, how to breathe through the flashbacks and anxiety, and how to stand my ground. With every drop of sweat, I was rebuilding my confidence and reclaiming the sense of self that had been taken from me as a child.
Turning Pain into Purpose
As I grew stronger in mind and body, something in me began to change. I realised that my story as painful as it was, it had a purpose. I thought about that quiet, frightened boy I used to be, and I knew there were others out there just like him. So many young people are living with hardship, whether it's violence at home, bullying at school, or the crushing weight of not fitting in. They walk through life carrying invisible wounds, hiding behind forced smiles, just waiting for someone to care. I couldn't stop thinking: What if I could be that someone for them? What if all the pain I endured could be used to help them fight back and find their own strength? That question became my mission. It led me to create Knockout Potential a program built to support young people through the very tools that saved me. With Knockout Potential, I set out to provide a safe haven for kids who are struggling, a place where they can learn to throw punches not out of anger, but with purpose and discipline. It's not just about boxing techniques; it's about building confidence, resilience, and self-respect. I wanted to surround these kids with positive role models and coaches who understand that sometimes the strongest people are the ones fighting battles no one else can see.
Empowering the Next Generation
Through Knockout Potential, I have witnessed incredible transformations. I’ve watched a timid 12-year-old girl find her voice in the ring, learning to shout with confidence after weeks of barely speaking above a whisper. I’ve seen a boy who used to get into trouble at school channel his frustration into training. The pride in his eyes when he realises he can control his anger instead of letting it control him is something I will never forget. These moments remind me exactly why I started this journey. Every session in the gym is another chance to tell a young person, through actions and words, "You matter. I’m here for you. And yes, I want to know – are you okay?" Knockout Potential is more than an organisation to me; it’s the lifeline I wished I had when I was younger. It’s my way of making sure that no child has to feel as alone and unheard as I once did. When I see these kids walk into the gym, shoulders hunched under the weight of their problems, I make a point to look them in the eye and let them know they're in a safe place now. We train hard, we sweat, and we spar, but we also talk. We talk about discipline and respect, but also about life about what’s on their minds. Sometimes all it takes to heal is having someone who will listen and care. My past could have broken me completely. There were times I thought it had. But standing here now, I see that every hardship was forging me into the person I am today. I took all that pain, all that anger and confusion, and I forged it into something strong and good. My journey from silence to strength has taught me that our wounds do not have to define us they can become the source of our greatest purpose. Today, I am living proof that it’s possible not only to survive the darkest of times, but to transform because of them. I’ve turned my pain into purpose. The little boy who once felt worthless is now a man who helps others see their worth. Founding Knockout Potential and working with these young people has been the most healing and fulfilling mission of my life. Every day, I get to witness the incredible resilience of the human spirit. Every day, I get to help make sure that no one fights their battles alone. If you’re reading this and you or someone you know is going through something heavy, please remember: it's okay to speak up, and it's okay to ask for help. You are stronger than you know, and there are people ready to help you fight back. I couldn't change my past, but I can use it to light the way forward for someone else. And as long as I have breath in my body, I will keep fighting for myself, for the young people I mentor, and for that hope that every child will one day hear someone ask, "Are you okay?" and know that they truly mean it. This is why I founded Knockout Potential. Not just to teach kids how to box, but to show them they have a fighting chance in life that they can rise above their circumstances, just as I did. My mission is to empower young people to break their silence, find their strength, and unleash their potential. Because every young person, no matter how difficult their start, deserves to feel safe, to feel heard, and to know that they can become so much more than their hardships.
